Characteristics, Material and Application Heavy‑section H‑beam

Heavy-Section H-Beams

Heavy-section H-beams are large, thick-webbed steel profiles (height ≥600 mm) engineered for heavy-load and long-span structures.

1. Key Characteristics
They offer superior bending resistance, lateral stiffness, and anti-buckling performance. Their optimised cross-sections ensure exceptional load-bearing capacity. As hot-rolled profiles, they require minimal welding and exhibit low residual stress, facilitating efficient prefabrication and swift on-site assembly. However, extra-large sections necessitate welded fabrication due to mill constraints. Furthermore, their high self-weight increases transport and hoisting costs, and lamellar tearing must be mitigated at thick-walled joints.

2. Common Materials

  • Q235B: General ambient temperatures.

  • Q355B: The standard low-alloy, high-strength grade for industrial and bridge applications; Q355C/D for low-temperature service.

  • Q420B/C/D: Ultra-heavy-load structures.

  • Z-grade steel: Critical thick-plate joints; weathering steel for outdoor projects.

Hot-rolled products comply with GB/T 11263, whilst welded components adhere to relevant structural welding codes.

3. Main Applications
Primary applications encompass steel columns and main girders for heavy-duty workshops with large-tonnage cranes, bridge piers, and steel trusses. They are also widely utilised in high-rise mega-frames, transfer girders, petrochemical and boiler frameworks, port load-bearing beams, large-venue roof trusses, and heavy underground support systems.
